|The Game Story:|
|BABSON PARK, Mass. – Thirteen different players scored goals for host Babson College as the Beavers coasted to a 19-2 victory over visiting UMass-Boston in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at MacDowell Field on Wednesday night. With the win, the Beavers improved to 7-4 on the year, while the Beacons fell to 1-8 overall.|
After winning the opening faceoff, Babson controlled the ball for the first 2:28 of the game before senior Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) ripped a shot from the left side inside the far post for the game's first goal at 12:32. Junior captain Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) then netted his first of the night in transition off a feed from senior captain Jeff MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) at 11:18, and sophomore Aaron Rocha (Rye, N.H.) made it 3-0 when he scored after a Beacon turnover at 8:09. Patinkin would later assist senior captain Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) on a man-up score with 1:51 left and sophomore Brad Bero (Carlisle, Mass.) added a goal 40 seconds later as the Beavers took a 5-0 lead after one.
Babson continued to dominate the second quarter of play, scoring three more times to increase its lead to 8-0 at the half. Sophomore Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio) scored the Beavers' first goal of the session at 4:48, senior Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) converted a Packer pass with 56.7 seconds left, and first-year Kevin Airoldi (Kennebunk, Maine) assisted classmate Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) on his first collegiate goal with 19.3 remaining.
Senior Brian Magner (Norwell, Mass.) opened the second half with a goal at 11:23, Patinkin netted his second at 10:30, and Bero tallied his second at 3:26 to make it 11-0 through three quarters of play. Junior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) then scored off a Magner pass to kick off the fourth quarter, giving Babson a 12-0 cushion.
UMass-Boston would finally break through with its first goal with 7:09 left in the game, as first-year Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) converted a pass from classmate Nate Staples (Salem, Mass.) from the left side. After Rocha answered with his second of the evening for Babson, Beacons' senior Ryan Fitzgerald (Abington, Mass.) struck off his own caused turnover deep in the Babson zone to cut his team's deficit to 13-2 with just under six minutes left. However, that would be all Babson's defense would allow, as the Beavers closed the game with a 6-0 run en route to the 19-2 victory.
Patinkin led all players with two goals and two assists for four points, while Schmidt, Packer, Bero, Rocha, and sophomore Mauricio Palazzi (McLean, Va.) also added two goals in the win. Rocha and Packer each contributed assists, while Airoldi joined them with three points thanks to a pair of helpers and his first collegiate goal with 23 seconds left in the fourth.
Defensively, Babson received a monster effort from first-year Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.), who totaled six groundballs and six caused turnovers. Junior Ben Jette (Old Lyme, Conn.) also picked up six groundballs, while first-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) had another huge night with 20 faceoff wins and 15 groundballs. All three of the Beavers' goalkeepers saw action in the win, with junior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) making one save, sophomore Adam Daroff (Pepper Pike, Ohio) turned away five shots – including three straight during a 13-second flurry midway through the third quarter – and junior Ryan Lee (Wallingford, Conn.) stopped two shots.
UMass-Boston received 19 saves from first-year goalie Henry Bristol (South Hadley, Mass.), as well as four caused turnovers by rookie Ryan Mahon (Commack, N.Y.).
