|BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College erupted for a season-high 21 goals en route to an impressive 21-1 victory over the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse contest at MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon.|
With the win, the Beavers improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in conference ,while the Buccaneers fell to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Junior captain Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) led all players with four goals and three assists for seven points for Babson, while senior Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) also scored four times. First-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) added career-highs of three goals, 15 groundballs, and 22 faceoff wins, and junior Blake Dudek (Lancaster, Pa.) and first-year Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) each caused three turnovers to pace the defense. Junior goalie James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made both of his team's saves in net while holding the Buccaneers scoreless in the first 30 minutes of play.
Sophomore Todd Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the game with 3:30 remaining in regulation for Mass Maritime, with senior captain Peter Menard (Somerset, Mass.) recording an assist on the play. Sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) started in net and made 11 saves in the first half before giving way to first-year Eric Kuehn (Norwell, Mass.), who stopped 15 shots in the final two quarters.
Babson completely dominated from the outset, scoring eight unanswered goals in the first quarter, six in the second, and four in the third. The Beavers then netted the first two goals of the fourth to push their lead to 20-0 before the Buccaneers finally broke through with 3:30 left. For the game, Babson held a 70-6 advantage in shots, a 72-24 edge in groundballs, and a 22-4 advantage in faceoff wins.
The Beavers jump right back into action this coming Tuesday, when they host nationally-ranked Tufts University under the lights at 7 p.m. Mass Maritime is off until Saturday, when the Buccaneers head to Worcester to face Clark University in a Pilgrim League matchup beginning at 11 a.m.
