| BABSON PARK, Mass. - Sophomore goalie Max Owen (Hamilton, N.J.) and the Babson College defense allowed just four goals on Saturday, as the Beavers defeated visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 8-4, in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse contest at MacDowell Field. Owen finished with 11 saves in net for Babson, which improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. First-year Luke Biggins (Sudbury, Mass.) scored the first two goals of the game to put Babson in front, 2-0, midway through the first quarter. MMA first-year Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) cut the Beavers' lead in half with a man-up goal with 1:16 remaining in the period, but the Beavers struck twice more in the first two minutes of the second quarter to go up, 4-1. Junior J.P. Gabriel (Hingham, Mass.) managed another goal for MMA at 6:02 of the second, but junior Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) scored his first of the afternoon with 1:03 left to give Babson a 5-2 advantage at the half. Sophomore Matt Harrington (Hanover, Mass.) increased Babson's lead to 7-2 with a pair of scores in the first three minutes of the third quarter - his second and third tallies of the day. First-year Brian Burke (San Diego, Calif.) would net a goal in each of the final two quarters, but that would be all Owen would allow as the Beavers claimed the 8-4 victory. Harrington led all player with three goals and one assist for four points, while Wellemeyer and Biggins finished with two goals apiece. First-year Jon Standen (South Hadley, Mass.) rounded out the Babson scoring with one goal, while Biggins and first-year Shane Farrell (West Warwick, R.I.) picked up a team-leading seven groundballs apiece. First-year goalie Chris Perry (Milton, Mass.) was outstanding in defeat for MMA, finishing with 23 saves. |
