|ABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College men’s lacrosse team opened its 2005 season with a stifling defensive effort on Thursday, as the Beavers defeated visiting New England College, 6-1, in a non-conference contest. The Beavers are now 1-0 on the season, while the Pilgrims dropped to 1-1.|
Sophomore Mike Maher (Cumberland, Maine) gave Babson a 1-0 lead with 4:11 left in the first quarter, as he converted a pass from first-year Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.). The Beavers then netted three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter to build a 4-0 advantage, as junior Jonathan Wyeth (New London, N.H.) scored at 11:14, senior co-captain Jared Connell (Yarmouth, Maine) added a goal at 10:01, and senior Steve Whitney (Hudson, Mass.) converted an assist from Wyeth at 5:13.
NEC finally got on the scoreboard in the closing seconds of the first half, as junior Neil Gundry (Calgary, Canada) assisted senior Eric Anderson (Portland, Maine) with just three seconds remaining. However, that would be all the offense the Pilgrims would muster against Babson senior goalie Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, N.Y.), who made seven of his 15 saves in the second half. Connell netted the Beavers’ fifth goal short-handed at 3:13 of the third, and Whitney assisted junior Mike O’Connell (Dedham, Mass.) at 10:41 of the fourth to finish off the 6-1 victory.
The Babson defense was outstanding in the win, fending off 10 of the Pilgrims’ 11 man-advantage opportunities. Senior Tyler Prudden (Andover, Mass.) went the distance in net for NEC, making 14 saves.
