|BABSON PARK, MASS. -- The Babson College men?s lacrosse team kicked off its 2003 season with a 9-6
victory over non-conference foe New England College on a bitterly cold Tuesday afternoon. The Beavers are
now 1-0, while the Pilgrims slipped to 0-4.
Babson took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter of play, thanks to two goals apiece from senior tri-captain
James Flavin (Littleton, Colo.) and junior tri-captain Brian Collins (Needham, Mass.). New England
College then scored a pair of goals in the second period to get to within two at 5-3, but Babson senior Todd
MacDowell (Wayland, Mass.) netted his second goal of the contest with 29 seconds left in the half to give
his team a 6-3 cushion heading into the break.
After the two teams swapped goals in the third quarter, New England senior Matt Stack (Laurel Hollow,
N.Y.) scored his third straight goal less than two minutes into the fourth, cutting the Pilgrims? deficit back
to two at 7-5. That set up a furious final four minutes which saw the two squads combine for three goals.
With 4:05 left in regulation, junior John Morrell (Wilton, Conn.) circled the entire offensive zone before
wrapping a shot around the left post, giving Babson an 8-5 advantage. Stack then answered with his fourth
score of the game with 3:10 remaining, but Beavers? junior Ted Barbeau (Longmeadow, Mass.) put the
game out of reach when his shot from in front deflected off NEC goalie Tyler Prudden?s (Andover, Mass.)
stick and rolled over the goal line with 1:29 on the clock. The Pilgrims were then called for a one-minute
penalty with 1:16 left, sealing the 9-6 Babson victory.
Senior tri-captain Paul DeFina (Concord, Mass.) was brilliant in net for Babson, stopping 14 shots,
including a pair of close-range bids in the third quarter. Prudden also played well for NEC, finishing with 12
