The Game Story:
BABSON PARK, MASS. -- The Babson College men?s lacrosse team kicked off its 2003 season with a 9-6 victory over non-conference foe New England College on a bitterly cold Tuesday afternoon. The Beavers are now 1-0, while the Pilgrims slipped to 0-4.

Babson took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter of play, thanks to two goals apiece from senior tri-captain James Flavin (Littleton, Colo.) and junior tri-captain Brian Collins (Needham, Mass.). New England College then scored a pair of goals in the second period to get to within two at 5-3, but Babson senior Todd MacDowell (Wayland, Mass.) netted his second goal of the contest with 29 seconds left in the half to give his team a 6-3 cushion heading into the break.

After the two teams swapped goals in the third quarter, New England senior Matt Stack (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) scored his third straight goal less than two minutes into the fourth, cutting the Pilgrims? deficit back to two at 7-5. That set up a furious final four minutes which saw the two squads combine for three goals.

With 4:05 left in regulation, junior John Morrell (Wilton, Conn.) circled the entire offensive zone before wrapping a shot around the left post, giving Babson an 8-5 advantage. Stack then answered with his fourth score of the game with 3:10 remaining, but Beavers? junior Ted Barbeau (Longmeadow, Mass.) put the game out of reach when his shot from in front deflected off NEC goalie Tyler Prudden?s (Andover, Mass.) stick and rolled over the goal line with 1:29 on the clock. The Pilgrims were then called for a one-minute penalty with 1:16 left, sealing the 9-6 Babson victory.

Senior tri-captain Paul DeFina (Concord, Mass.) was brilliant in net for Babson, stopping 14 shots, including a pair of close-range bids in the third quarter. Prudden also played well for NEC, finishing with 12 saves.
