|The Game Story:|
|BABSON PARK, Mass. -- First-year Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) scored six goals and assisted another to lead the Babson College men’s lacrosse team to an impressive 17-4 victory over visiting Norwich University in a Pilgrim League contest on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Cadets fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Pilgrim League. |
Babson built a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter, beginning with back-to-back goals by junior Mike O’Connell (Dedham, Mass.). Norwich got one goal back when first-year Jon Hayes (Waltham, Mass.) scored with three minutes left in the period, but Babson senior co-captain Jared Connell (Yarmouth, Maine) netted a goal with 1:49 remaining to give his team a 5-1 lead after one. Both teams followed with two goals in the second quarter, as the Beavers took a 7-3 advantage at the half.
After the two squads traded goals to start the third quarter, Babson opened the game up with five unanswered scores in the final 6:30 of the period. Wellemeyer scored two of those goals, including the capper with 24 seconds remaining, to give the Beavers a commanding 13-4 advantage with one quarter left to play. Babson then outscored the Cadets, 4-0, in the fourth for the 17-4 final.
In addition to Wellemeyer’s seven points, Babson also received three goals and three assists from senior Steve Whitney (Hudson, Mass.), as well as two goals and three helpers from Connell. Junior Nate Brawn (Topsham, Maine) chipped in with two goals and two assists, while senior co-captain Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with nine saves in just under 50 minutes in net.
