The Game Story:
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College began the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals to pull away from visiting Utica College on Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers defeated the Pioneers, 19-12, in a non-conference men’s lacrosse contest. Babson improved to 2-0 with the win, while Utica suffered its first loss to fall to 3-1.

Babson dominated the contest early on, jumping out to a 6-1 lead behind two quick goals from senior Steve Whitney (Hudson, Mass.). The Beavers would eventually take an 8-3 lead at the end of one, but Utica came back to outscore the home team, 4-2, in the second quarter to cut its deficit to just three, 10-7, heading into the half.

After the two teams traded goals over the first 10 minutes of the third quarter, Utica closed the period by scoring three straight to pull to within just two at 13-11. However, Babson finished off the contest with a dominating fourth-quarter effort, scoring five straight goals to push its lead to 18-11. Junior Nate Brawn (Topsham, Maine) scored the first two at 14:33 and 13:16, while junior Mike O’Connell (Dedham, Mass.) added another at 8:40. O’Connell then assisted first-year Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) with 6:16 left to play, and Whitney netted his fourth of the game at 2:59 to cap off the 5-0 run. Utica would get one goal back when sophomore Steve Schoen (Whitesboro, N.Y.) scored with 1:34 remaining, but Whitney closed out a tremendous performance with his fifth of the afternoon with under a minute left, giving the Beavers the 19-12 victory.

In addition to Whitney’s five goals, Babson received four scores from Brawn and four goals and 11 ground balls from senior co-captain Jared Connell (Yarmouth, Maine). Sophomore Mike Maher (Cumberland, Maine) added one goal and three assists in the win, while Wellemeyer finished with two goals and two assists. First-year Ed Baran (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Jonathan Wyeth (New London, N.H.) each recorded one goal and two assists apiece, while senior co-captain Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, N.Y.) stopped nine shots in net to earn the victory.

Utica was paced by sophomore Ryan McGowan (Northport, N.Y.) and senior Matt Donaldson (Dexter, N.Y.), who each scored three goals, and Schoen, who finished with one goal and three assists.
