March 23, 2002
The Game Story:
LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College men's lacrosse team outscored the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals, 5-2, in the second half as the Bobcats picked up a 9-6 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win on Campus Avenue Field today. The win was Bates' first over Wesleyan since 1996 and sent the Cardinals to their first regular season NESCAC loss since the 2000 season.

With the game tied, 4-4, at halftime, Bates (3-1, 1-0 NESCAC) took the lead for good on the first goal of the day by rookie attack Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt.) and an assist from senior Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) nine minutes into the second half. Sandler doubled the margin to 6-4 with 3:41 remaining on a feed from behind the net from classmate Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.).

Wesleyan (3-2, 0-1 NESCAC) opened the fourth-quarter scoring midway into the period on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Mark Nordstrom (Acton, Mass.). Friedman's second goal with 5:36 left in the contest set off a flurry of scoring, as Nordtrom answered 44 seconds later to cut the lead back to one at 7-6. Frederick responded just 12 seconds later and sophomore John Sullivan (Concord, N.H.) tallied the game's final goal just 39 seconds after that.

Frederick led all scorers with four points (2G, 2A), while Bates senior midfielder Matt Winterle (Duxbury, Mass.) had three points (1G, 2A) and Friedman had two (2G). Wesleyan's Nordstrom and sophomore Sandy Cole (Baltimore, Md.) each scored two goals for the Cardinals. Bates junior goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 11 saves in the winning effort, while Cardinal rookie Matt Wheeler (Darien, Conn.) made nine stops.

Bates plays its next contest against the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) tomorrow at 11 a.m., while Wesleyan hosts Western New England College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
