|LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College men's lacrosse team outscored the
visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals, 5-2, in the second half as
the Bobcats picked up a 9-6 New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) win on Campus Avenue Field today. The win was
Bates' first over Wesleyan since 1996 and sent the Cardinals to their
first regular season NESCAC loss since the 2000 season.
With the game tied, 4-4, at halftime, Bates (3-1, 1-0 NESCAC) took
the lead for good on the first goal of the day by rookie attack Peter
Friedman (Putney, Vt.) and an assist from senior Jack Sandler
(Hicksville, N.Y.) nine minutes into the second half. Sandler doubled
the margin to 6-4 with 3:41 remaining on a feed from behind the net
from classmate Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.).
Wesleyan (3-2, 0-1 NESCAC) opened the fourth-quarter scoring midway
into the period on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Mark
Nordstrom (Acton, Mass.). Friedman's second goal with 5:36 left in
the contest set off a flurry of scoring, as Nordtrom answered 44
seconds later to cut the lead back to one at 7-6. Frederick responded
just 12 seconds later and sophomore John Sullivan (Concord, N.H.)
tallied the game's final goal just 39 seconds after that.
Frederick led all scorers with four points (2G, 2A), while Bates
senior midfielder Matt Winterle (Duxbury, Mass.) had three points
(1G, 2A) and Friedman had two (2G). Wesleyan's Nordstrom and
sophomore Sandy Cole (Baltimore, Md.) each scored two goals for the
Cardinals. Bates junior goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 11
saves in the winning effort, while Cardinal rookie Matt Wheeler
(Darien, Conn.) made nine stops.
Bates plays its next contest against the US Merchant Marine Academy
(Kings Point) tomorrow at 11 a.m., while Wesleyan hosts Western New
England College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
