The Game Story:
CASTLETON, Vt. – Norwich University scored six-straight second half goals, and received an incredible effort from senior goalie Nathan Proctor (Pleasanton, Calif.) to earn a 7-3 win over Castleton State College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Thursday evening at Spartan Stadium

Proctor finished with 17 saves, including six under stern pressure during the third period, while Arron Canaerelli (New Hartford, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead the attack.

Castleton received single markers from Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt.), Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) and A.J. Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.)

Murray opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the contest, potting his fourth goal of the season off a Davidson helper. Davidson hit a cutting Murray after circling behind the cage and receiving a screen from Cam Ormiston (Wakefield, R.I.) which drew Murray’s defender and led to the score.

Patrick Tommins (Fairfield, Conn.) knotted the game at 1-1 with 7:51 remaining in the second period, taking advantage of an extra man opportunity. Wiederanders found the cutting Tommins, and fed him perfectly for his 13th goal of the season.

With two minutes left before halftime Davidson grabbed the Spartan lead back, scorching the net for his 17th of the season on a great individual effort.

The second half belonged to Proctor and the Cadets. Norwich scored two-straight goals, grabbing its first lead of the game in the third period on goals from Wiederanders and Canarelli. Wiederanders converted on an extra man opportunity off a Patrick Sikora (Montpelier, Vt.) assist. Canarelli gave the Cadets the lead with just over a minute remaining in the third period. Proctor owned the net as Castleton unleashed eight shots, including six on goal all of which were turned away.

The scoring run continued into the fourth period as the Cadets put up four-straight before Castleton could answer. Mendoza had a hand in two-straight goals to stretch the lead to 5-2 with 12 minutes remaining. Mendoza’s sixth goal of the season came with 13:44 left as he rifled one past from the point. Less than two minutes later Mendoza set up Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) for his fourth of the season. Canarelli pushed the lead to 6-2 with 9:47 remaining, utilizing a series of jukes and spins to free himself for his second of the contest.

Joey Ditommaso (Hubbard, Ohio) capped the Norwich run with an unassisted tally at the 5:02 mark, before Groot got one back for the home side with 2:24 remaining.

Norwich controlled the face-off circle, winning 11-of-14 while Castleton held a 33-29 advantage in the shot column.

Alex Brands (Woodstock, Vt.) led the Spartan defense with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers while freshman goalie Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) made eight saves in the loss.

Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) was an impressive 10-for-12 on face-offs, while Sikora corralled a team-best five ground balls.

Castleton falls to 1-6 on the season and will travel to Southern Maine on April 2 for a 4 pm non-conference match up.
