The Game Story:
In an evenly played game against one of the top teams in the country, the Clarkson University Lacrosse team came up just short in its bid to knock off second-ranked SUNY Cortland as the Red Dragons were able to hold off the Golden Knights to gain an 8-6 victory in non-league play at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Playing in its final home game of the regular season Clarkson battled the highly-touted Red Dragons tough all afternoon long, but Cortland was able to withstand a late charge by the Knights to keep its record perfect, at 14-0.

Clarkson stands at 8-4 overall and closes out the regular season at conference foe Vassar next Saturday with a berth for the upcoming Liberty League playoffs on the line. The Knights own a 2-3 conference record.

Freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) led the Knights in scoring with three goals, while Joe Slavik tallied a game-high four goals to pace the Red Dragons.

Both teams had 31 shots, while Cortland controlled ground balls, 34-20. Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) posted nine saves in goal for Clarkson and Mike Kaminski made 14 stops for Cortland.

Tied 1-1 through the first quarter, the Knights took a 3-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter as freshman Mark Nortz (Lowville, NY) and sophomore Tim Krauss (Niskayuna, NY) scored their second and first goals of the season, respectively. The Red Dragons then rattled off three straight goals, with Mike Tota connecting twice, to hold a 4-3 lead at the half. Cortland, behind two scores from Slavik, continued to control play to start third quarter with three more goals to complete a six-goal run, taking a 7-3 lead with 11:05 remaining in the period.

Herrington then found his scoring touch with two goals to close out the third quarter, cutting Cortland’s lead to 7-5 through 45 minutes. Herrington connected again to pull the Knights within one, at 7-6, with 11:28 remaining.

The Red Dragons controlled the ball for the majority of the time left on the clock and sealed the win with Slavik’s fourth goal of the day with 3:43 remaining.

Junior Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) scored one goal and assist for Clarkson, while junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and sophomore Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) picked up one assist each.
