Clarkson vs. Oneonta State
March 7, 2009
The Game Story:
Canton, NY - Senior attackmen Tom Ross (Adams, NY) and Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) each scored four times as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team opened up the 2009 season with a 14-4 victory over Oneonta State Saturday afternoon at SUNY Canton.

The Golden Knights are 1-0 and will face Potsdam State on Tuesday. The Red Dragons of Oneonta dropped to 1-3 on the season.

From the beginning, the Golden Knights controlled the play and held possession for most of the first period, but it was the Red Dragons who would get on the scoreboard first on a goal from Steve Loesch at 4:41 of the opening period. Clarkson quickly responded with a pair of goals to end the period, both scored by Ross.

To start the second, the Knights and Dragons traded scores, but Clarkson would score two goals in the final minute to gain a 6-3 advantage at the break. The Green and Gold exploded to start the third period, scoring five times in the first five minutes as the team won virtually every face off and picked up nearly every groundball to start the frame. The Knights put an exclamation point on their dominating third-period effort, as senior Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) scored as the clock expired on a pass from the corner from freshman Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ).

Ross and Gibbbons each scored four goals to lead the Knights while Cathcart added two picturesque scores as well. Freshman Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) also scored two goals, while Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) and Mike Ross (Adams, NY) scored one goal apiece. Oneonta's Steve Loesch and Dennis Headrick each scored twice.

Clarkson had wide advantages in several non-scoring categories, overpowering the Red Dragons in groundballs (55-26), shots (49-19), and in face offs (15-6). Jon Szvoren (Hamburg, NY) made five saves for the Knights.
