KNIGHTS SUFFER ONE-GOAL LOSS
March 25, 2006

A late rally by the Clarkson University Lacrosse team fell short as Plattsburgh State held off the Golden Knights to gain an 8-7 win at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday night.

Plattsburgh held a 7-5 lead with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Clarkson battled back with two of the last three goals to make it a one-goal game.

Clarkson freshman Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) tallied with 2:15 left to make it 7-6, but Bill Schmitt answered back with Plattsburgh’s eighth goal with 1:18 to play. The Knights’ captain Bryan Johnson (Newark, NY) scored the game’s final goal with 27 seconds left.

Freshman Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) led Clarkson with three goals and two assists. Freshmen Cory Reinhart (Albany, NY) and Cory Schneider (Yorktown, NY) both scored one goal each for the Green and Gold.

Frank Sangiovanni led the Cardinals with three goals and one assist.

Plattsburgh, which improved its record to 6-0, overcame a 3-1 deficit early in the second period to take a 5-3 lead at the half. The Golden Knights outscored Plattsburgh 2-1 in the third period to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 6-5 after 45 minutes of play. The teams traded two goals apiece in the final stanza.

Clarkson out shot Plattsburgh 37-25 and controlled groundballs 35-25. Johsnon picked up a game-high seven groundballs.

Freshman Eric Wolery (Cincinnati, OH) made eight saves for the Knights.

The Knights, at 1-4, will play at Potsdam State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
