Wide Ranging Attack Leads Clarkson to Win Over Plattsburgh

Canton, NY - Nine different players scored goals, with Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) assisting five times, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team rallied from an early deficit to post a 14-8 victory over Plattsburgh State Wednesday afternoon at SUNY Canton's Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-2 overall this season, while the Cardinals dropped to 4-5 on the year. Clarkson will begin the Liberty League schedule this weekend when it travels to face Union College on Saturday.

Clarkson began the game down two goals in the first 11 minutes, but the Knights found their offense quickly by scoring four goals in a span of just over two minutes before the quarter expired. The Knights continued on the offensive at the start of the second quarter with four goals in the first six and a half minutes, taking an 8-3 advantage. The Cardinals pulled to within two goals midway through the frame, but would never get closer as the Knights answered all of Plattsburgh's goals for the remainder of the game.

Greg Gibbons spent most of the contest as a playmaker for the Knights, assisting on five goals and finally scoring one of his own with 1:25 left in the contest. Tom Ross (Adams, NY) and Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) each added three scores and an assist, while Cory Schneider (Yorkstown, NY) scored twice. Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY), Steve Kennedy (Niskayuna, NY), Kyle Alexander (Clifton Park, NY), Matt Opar (Lexington, MA) and Josh Flacke (Schenectady, NY) also tallied one goal each, with Kennedy and Hoey each adding an assist.

Senior goaltender Greg Lamb (Baldwinsville, NY) played well in goal for the Knights, making 17 saves, and John Svoren (Hamburg, NY) made two stops in 2:33 of action. For Plattsburgh, Billy Hughes made 11 stops.

Frank Sangiovanni and Luke Weidlein each scored a pair of goals to go along with an assist to lead Plattsburgh. Adrian Marino, Bryan Copius, Tom Cerny, and Dan Defrancesco also scored goals for the Cardinals.
