Clarkson vs. Potsdam State
March 24, 2008
The Game Story:
Keyed by the stingy defensive play from its starting long-poles, the Clarkson University Lacrosse team soundly defeated Potsdam College 11-5 on the Bears’ artificial turf field on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights’ starting defensive trio of juniors Andrew Kott (Auburn, NY) and John Weinhold (Queensbury, NY) and sophomore Evan Renwick (Wappingers Falls, NY) helped to shut down the Bear’s offense for most of the game as the Green and Gold posted their third straight victory over their cross-town rivals.

Clarkson controlled the game from the start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter and held a 4-1 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Senior midfielder Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY), who shared the Knights’ scoring lead with four points, tallied two of his three goals in the opening offensive spurt.

Freshman Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) and Cathcart added a goal apiece in the second quarter to put Clarkson ahead 6-1 at the half. The Knights out scored the Bears 5-4 over the final 30 minutes to post the six-goal victory.

Potsdam scored the final three goals in the game with less than five minutes to play to make the score close.

Clarkson held the Bears to just seven shots in the first half. Potsdam, benefiting from its late push, out shot the Knights 11-5 over the fourth quarter, and held a 30-27 advantage overall in shots

Senior Greg Lamb (Baldwinsville, NY), who faced just three shots on goal in the first half, finished with 11 saves while allowing just two goals in the first 54:30 of action. Junior John Svoren (Hamburg, NY) played the final 5:30 and made three stops on six shots.

Junior John Ross (Adams, NY) posted a game-high four points, along with Cathcart, with two goals and two assists. Junior Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) scored three goals. Long finished with two scores, while junior Cory Schneider (Yorktown, NY) tallied once. Junior Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) recorded two assists.

Five different players scored for Potsdam. Garrett Sharp led the Bears offensively with two points (1-1). Billy Richards made nine saves for Potsdam.

The Golden Knights, who have won three straight, improved their record to 3-1. Clarkson will play Geneseo State on Saturday somewhere in the North Country at a site yet to be determined.

Potsdam suffered its first loss of the year to go to 2-1.
