April 16, 2005
The Game Story:
The Clarkson University Lacrosse team opened a three-game home stand at Hantz Field with a stingy defensive effort on Saturday, but fell one goal short in its bid to remain unbeaten in Liberty league play as Rensselaer pulled out a 4-3 victory.

Rensselaer held a 2-0 half-time advantage before Clarkson got on the scoreboard with 90 seconds left in the third quarter as junior Bryan Johnson (Newark, NY) scored off an assist from freshman Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY). The Golden Knights tied it up early in the final quarter when freshman long stick midfielder Matt Opar (Lexington, MA) picked up a groundball off a face off and scored on the rush at 14:43.

The Red Hawks went back on top with Chris Sherman’s second goal of the game, at 13:16. With 7:26 left to play, Clarkson captain, senior Rich Burritt (Oswego, NY) tallied his 10th goal of the season, unassisted, to knot the game at three-all.
Mike Sampson scored with 6:08 remaining for the game-winner.

Rensselaer (5-4, 3-0) held a 35-28 shot advantage and a slim edge in groundballs, 36-34. Senior Joe Zebrowski (Liverpool, NY) posted 12 saves for the Knights, including seven in the third quarter, and picked up six groundballs.

Clarkson, at 5-5 overall, and 2-1 in Liberty League play, resumes action this Wednesday when it hosts North Country rival St. Lawrence in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
