| CORTLAND, N.Y. ? Seniors Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) and junior Mike Felice (Baldwinsville) each recorded three goals and an assist and senior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored three times to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland men?s lacrosse team to a 12-5 victory over 17th-ranked Cabrini College Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 6-2. Junior Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) added a goal and three assists for the Red Dragons and became the 33rd player in school history to reach 100 career points. Senior Matt O?Connell (Camillus/West Genesee) contributed two assists for Cortland, while junior Tony Ventiquattro (Deferiet/Carthage) and sophomore Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) collected one goal each. Senior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made 12 saves in 56:14 of action, and freshman Michael Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) stopped two shots in 3:46. Five different players scored one goal for the Cavaliers ? senior Matt Campbell (Arnold, MD/Broadneck), sophomores Dan DeRosa (Pleasantville) and Patrick Jenkins (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick), and freshmen Matt Conaway (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) and Scott Reimer (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West). Senior Kevin Rayer (Woodlyn, PA/Ridley) recorded two assists. Junior goalie Kevin Quinn (Lindenhurst) stopped 15 shots. Cortland led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter on a goal from Hyde and two from Felice. Simensky and Lambert pushed the Red Dragons? lead to 5-1 early in the second quarter. Campbell cut the lead to 5-2 with 10:05 remaining and the score remained the same until halftime. Lambert netted the first of his two man-up goals at 13:37 of the third and Felice followed with his third of the game at 12:59 to extend Cortland?s lead to 7-2. After multiple penalties on each team, Cabrini cut the lead to 7-4 with 4:35 on the clock in the third period on goals from DeRosa and Conaway. Cortland responded with a pair of goals ? an around-the-back shot from Abbott and Ventiquattro?s unassisted goal -- to close out the quarter with a 9-4 lead. Lambert opened the fourth quarter with a man-up goal at 13:08, and Abbott notched his second of the game at 10:24 for a commanding 11-4 lead. Jenkins and Abbott traded late goals for the final tally of 12-5. The game featured 21 penalties ? 13 against Cabrini and eight on Cortland. The Red Dragons were 4-of-8 on man-up opportunities, while the Cavaliers went 0-for-6. |
