Cortland State vs. Cabrini
April 23, 2005
The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse)
scored a career-high eight goals to lead the nationally second-ranked
Cortland men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over Cabrini College
Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game. Hughes moved into a
third-place tie with 134 career goals, matching the mark by '67 graduate
Rich Felser and trailing only Dennis Pupke '98 (145) and Cortland career
scoring leader Mike Perkins '85 (154).

Hughes netted the Red Dragons' first four goals of the game, which gave
Cortland a 4-2 lead at the half. He opened the scoring with an unassisted
score midway through the first period. After Cabrini senior Mark Phillips
(Morristown, NJ) knotted the game at 1-1 just 32 seconds later with his
team-high 27th goal, Hughes closed out the opening period with a pair of
goals 42 seconds apart, assisted by junior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) and
sophomore Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley).

Junior Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson) set up Hughes' man-up goal at
10:39 of the second quarter to give Cortland a 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers cut
the deficit to 4-2 on junior Kevin Rayer's (Woodlyn, PA/Ridley) unassisted
goal with three minutes remaining and Cotland took the lead into
intermission. Cabrini sophomore goalie Kevin Quinn (Lindenhurst) kept the
game close for the Cavaliers, making 12 of his 18 saves in the opening 30
minutes as Cortland outshot Cabrini, 28-13, in the first two quarters.

Each team could only manage one goal apiece in the third quarter with
freshman Chris Hannon (Baldwin) scoring for Cortland and freshman Matt
McKinney (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) finding the back of the net for Cabrini.

Leading just 5-3 entering the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons erupted for
eight goals, four from Hughes, to put the game out of reach. Junior Mike
Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham), who finished with three assists, set up
junior Matt O'Connell's (Camillus/West Genesee) goal at 12:32. Hughes then
scored off a feed from Lambert at 10:17, and Abbott assisted Atkins score
at 9:52 to make it an 8-3 game. Senior Paul Archambault (Aurora,
CO/Grandview) connected for the Cavaliers at 7:40, but Hughes answered back
with his sixth goal nine seconds later when he stole a pass and beat Quinn
one-on-one to start a five-goal run for the Red Dragons.

Lambert picked up his third assist of the day on Hughes' seventh goal at
6:21. Atkins and Lambert then scored less than a minute apart and Hughes
finished off his record day with an unassisted goal, his team-high 36th of
the season, at 2:57 to give Cortland a 13-4 lead. Cabrini completed the
scoring when junior Matt Campbell (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) collected his
second assist of the game on junior Dave Barba's (Arnold, MD/Broadneck)
16th goal of the season.

Cortland junior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) had a big second half
for the Red Dragons, making 11 of his 16 saves in the final 30 minutes.
Cortland outshot Cabrini, 48-35, in the game, held a 63-51 advantage in
ground balls and allowed the Cavaliers to successfully complete just
17-of-36 clears.
