|The Game Story:|
|CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) and senior Andrew Roth
(Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) each scored four goals and Cortland's
defense limited Geneseo to just two goals over the first three quarters as
the nationally third-ranked Red Dragons defeated Geneseo, 13-5, in a SUNYAC
contest. Cortland has won 11 straight games and is now 12-1 overall and 5-0
in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons clinched the top seed in next week's SUNYAC
playoffs with the victory. Geneseo is 7-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Lambert finished with an assist in addition to his four goals. Junior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) added two goals and an assist and senior Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) stopped seven shots in goal for the win.
Geneseo was led by Chris Kelley (Syracuse/CBA), who finished with two goals. Senior David Spennacchio (Fairport) had a goal and an assist. His man-down goal with 4:27 left in the contest was the 200th point of his collegiate career.
Senior Andy Howk (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) started in goal for the Knights. He allowed 10 goals and made nine saves over three periods. Senior David Knapp (Canandaigua) played the final 15 minutes, allowing three goals and making two saves.
Cortland took a 4-0 lead after one quarter on goals by Roth, sophomore Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee), Lambert and Hyatt. Freshman Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) notched the first of his two assists on Hyatt's goal, which came with eight seconds left in the quarter. Hyatt reached back for a crossing pass from Simensky and shot in one motion while falling down.
The Knights got on the board with 13:06 left in the half on a Kelley goal, assisted by senior Steve Youngman (Rochester/Irondequoit). An extra-man goal by Hughes, followed by goals from Lambert and Roth, extended Cortland's lead, however, to 7-1 with 7:01 remaining. Pat Riehlman (Skaneateles) scored for Geneseo with 1:01 left in the half.
Cortland blanked the Knights, 3-0, in the third quarter. Roth scored at the 13:27 mark, followed by freshman Mike Felice (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) with 12 minutes left. Neither team scored again until Roth found the net with 48 seconds left in the quarter. Lambert's goal 1:12 into the fourth pushed the lead to 11-2. Kelley was credited with a goal with 12:09 remaining after a Cortland defenseman accidentally put the ball into his own goal while trying to send a pass back to Gaebel. Kelley was the closest Geneseo player to the defenseman at the time. The teams scored two goals apiece over the final 12 minutes.
Cortland was 4-of-10 on extra-man opportunities in the contest, including both of Hughes' goals. The Red Dragons outshot the Knights, 44-24, and held a 39-23 ground ball advantage. Freshman Bill Gleason (Camillus/West Genesee) won 8-of-10 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high seven ground balls.
