The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Nationally fourth-ranked Cortland defeated 19th-ranked Geneseo, 11-4, Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the SUNYAC tournament to claim its second straight league crown and third consecutive NCAA berth. The win was the 14th straight for the Red Dragons and improved their record to 15-2 on the season, while the loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Knights (11-3).

Senior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Geneseo answered back on freshman Pat Riehlman's (Skaneateles) score at the 10:58 mark, but Red Dragon junior Andrew Pultz (Farmingdale), who won 15-of-19 faceoffs and registered 14 ground balls, quickly changed the momentum. Pultz won the ensuing faceoff, raced into the offensive end and beat Geneseo junior goalie Andy Howk (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) just five seconds after the Knights had tied the game at 1-1. From that point, Cortland never relinquished the lead.

Elvin set up senior Craig Degnan's (Rockville Centre/South Side) first of two goals to give Cortland a 3-1 lead, and after freshman Jack Ryerson (Rochester/Brighton) scored for the Knights, Elvin assisted on freshman Kyle Lambert's (Brentwood) goal to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 lead after the opening quarter.

The teams traded scores in the second quarter, with Geneseo junior Dave Spennacchio (Fairport) netting an unassisted goal at 11:15 and Cortland's Lambert scoring his second of the game at 5:31. Cortland led 5-3 at intermission.

The Red Dragons seized the momentum early in the third quarter with three quick scores. Elvin set up two of the goals, the first by Degnan 27 seconds in and the second by junior Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) at 13:41. Lambert's third goal of the game with 10:21 remaining in the quarter prompted a timeout by Geneseo. The Knights responded with a man-up goal from sophomore Chris Stock (Rochester/Penfield) at the 7:40 mark to pull to within 8-4 at the end of three quarters.

The Red Dragons tallied the only goals in the final quarter, as their long sticks and defensive midfielders did a standout job in front of senior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), who made 12 saves in the game. Pultz, senior Rob McCurdy (Lynbrook), senior Chris Hansen (Penn Yan), junior David Barth (Plainview/Bethpage), junior Frank Estrella (Suffern) and sophomore Dan Mendelson (Massapequa Park/Farmingdale) each was a factor in holding the Knights to four goals in the game.

Howk finished the game with 13 saves for Geneseo, while senior Michael Draper (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) made a key save in the third quarter while Feltmann was serving a one-minute slashing penalty. Stock and Spennacchio each finished with a goal and an assist for the Knights. Lambert had three goals, Elvin finished with a goal and four assists and Roth contributed two goals and three assists to lead the Red Dragons, who earned their 12th overall NCAA bid at the Division III level.
