|The Game Story:|
|CORTLAND, N.Y. ~V Junior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored three goals,|
including the 100th of his career, and junior Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West
Genesee) scored all three of his goals in the second half as nationally
fourth-ranked Cortland held off Ithaca College, 14-12, in a men's lacrosse
matchup under the Cortland Stadium Complex lights. The Red Dragons are now
7-1, while the Bombers drop to 4-4.
Freshmen Chris Hannon (Baldwin) and Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East)
and junior Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson) scored two goals apiece for
Cortland. Junior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made 12 saves.
Ithaca was led by Brendan Geluso's (Greenlawn/Harborfields) four goals.
Senior Sean Thomson (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) and junior Doug Lumb (Auburn)
each finished with three goals and one assist and sophomore Dennis Butler
(Pleasantville) recorded 12 saves.
Cortland erased an early 2-1 deficit and led 4-2 after the first quarter.
Lambert netted his milestone goal with 11:58 left in the second quarter to
push the lead to 5-2. He is the 15th player in school history to score 100
goals (now at 101). The Red Dragons held a 7-3 lead with less than three
minutes left in the half before the Bombers rattled off three goals to end
the period. Thomson scored with 2:20 left, followed by Geluso with 36
seconds left. With the clock running down, Thomson was able to deflect in a
long shot by Lumb. The goal just beat the horn and drew Ithaca within a goal
at the break.
Cortland dominated play in the third quarter, outshooting the Bombers by a
24-3 margin and scoring four of the period's five goals to push its lead to
11-7. Lambert and O'Connell scored in the first six minutes of the period.
Lumb answered with 3:47 left, but Atkins and O'Connell added goals in the
final two and a half minutes.
The guests responded quickly in the fourth, however, to keep the game close.
The Bombers, who outshot Cortland 18-9 in the period, scored three times in
a 55-second span to close within 11-10. Geluso scored at the 12:53 mark,
followed by Matt Casey (Syracuse/Corcoran) at 12:34 and Lumb at 11:58.
O'Connell found the net for Cortland with 9:08 remaining, but Geluso came
right back at the 7:32 mark to close the Cortland lead to 12-11.
Cortland held on, however, as Hyde scored with 5:12 remaining and Atkins
netted a goal with 3:06 left. Ithaca made one last push as Geluso scored
with 2:24 remaining. The Bombers also had a one-minute man advantage with
1:25 left after a slashing call on the Red Dragons, but Cortland was able to
kill off the penalty and run out the clock.
Cortland finished with a slight 48-46 shot advantage and a 16-13 edge in
faceoffs won. Hyde won 7-of-10 faceoffs. Cortland also scooped up 50 ground
balls to 39 for the Bombers.
