CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally third-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up an 11-0 lead at the half and went on to defeat Montclair St., 16-4, Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
For the second straight game, Red Dragon freshman Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored four goals. Freshman Greg Wright (Irondequoit) collected three goals and an assist, senior Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley) had two goals and three assists and juniors Brian Krol (Niskayuna) and Chris Dutkowsky (Vestal) added a goal and an assist each. Freshman Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage) contributed two assists, sophomore Chris DeLuca (Sayville) won 11-of-11 faceoffs through the first three quarters and junior Tom Burke (Massapequa) collected nine ground balls. Senior goalie Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) stopped three shots in 46 minutes, 20 seconds, before giving way to senior Mike Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison), who did not register a save over the final 13:40.
Sophomore Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) led Montclair St. (2-1) with two goals. Sophomore Ronnie Umphenour (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and freshman Matthew Prongay (Edison, NJ) scored one goal apiece, sophomore Mike Corsetto (Kinelon, NJ) pickede up two assists and John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ) had one assist. Senior goalie Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ/Pope JonXXIII), the Red Hawks' career leader in saves, stopped 10 shots in 47:27 and became just the 24th player in Division III history to surpass 700 career saves. Junior Andrew Rosado (Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Joseph's (MT)) made three saves in 9:20, and freshman Mark Glander (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) did not make a save over the final 3:13.
Cortland (2-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes, as Tota scored twice and Morgan had a goal and an assist. The Red Dragons led 1-0 with a little more than six and half minutes left in the quarter but exploded for six goals over the final 6:36 for their 7-0 lead. Krol and Tota made it 9-0 with 6:02 left in the first half before Wright scored back-to-back goals 1:44 apart late for the 11-0 advantage at intermission. Cortland outshot Montclair St., 38-3, in the first half.
Prongay put the Red Hawks on the scoreboard with a man-up goal at 9:47 of the third. Morgan netted his second of the game at 6:33 before Meth made it 12-2 with his first at 2:36. Cortland, however closed out the third quarter with goals from Tota and sophomore Matt Evanchak (Syracuse/West Genesee). The teams traded four goals over the final quarter highlighted by Cortland freshman Matt Hoey's (Auburn) first career goal to close the scoring at 1:38.
