|CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored two goals and handed out two assists to become the eighth Cortland player to surpass 200 career points and head coach Steve Beville earned his program-best 95th win as the nationally second-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Oneonta, 11-6, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.|
Beville, who owns a career-record of 95-16, surpassed Chuck Winters as the all-time wins leader at Cortland. Winters recorded a 94-55 mark from 1973-83. Tota now has 201 career points on 146 goals and 55 assists.
Senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) each registered two goals and one assist for the host Red Dragons (10-0, 2-0 SUNYAC). Freshman Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) netted a pair of goals, and senior Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage), sophomore Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and freshman Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) scored one goal apiece. Seniors Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee) and Eric Richards (Skaneateles) each chipped in with one assist.
Junior Mike Kaminski (Sayville) started in the cage, making eight saves and allowing two goals in 47 minutes, four seconds before giving way to sophomore Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder), who stopped one shot over the final 12:56. Junior Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 12-of-21 faceoffs. Kennedy, Tota and Winterfeldt each collected five ground balls with Kennedy recording three caused turnovers.
Junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley) led the visiting Red Dragons (2-7, 0-1 SUNYAC) with three goals. Junior John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks) contributed one goal and one assist, senior Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and sophomore Keith McNierney (Commack) scored once and sophomore Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) and freshman Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) each added one assist.
Senior goalie Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) turned aside 17 shots and scooped up six ground balls. Junior Scott Sorrillo (Montebello/Suffern) recorded three caused turnovers, senior Hugh O'Gorman (Putnam Valley) registered five ground balls and van de Veerdonk had four.
In a sloppy game that totaled 49 turnovers and a total of 19 failed clears, Cortland took the lead at 13:20 of the first period on Mulvaney's goal from 10 yards out. After van de Veerdonk tied the game at 10:06, the host Red Dragons ran off five straight goals spanning the first and second quarters for a 6-1 lead at the 4:16 mark of the second. Rakoczy scored unassisted at 7:27 of the first and Tota set up Consul's goal at 6:25 to give Cortland a 3-1 lead through the opening 15 minutes. Tota made it 4-1 at 11:54 of the second on Wright's assist, then Wright and Consul tallied goals at 5:50 and 4:16. Van de Veerdonks's second goal of the game at 3:33 of the second made it a 6-2 game at intermission.
The host Red Dragons took control of the game by outscoring Oneonta, 3-0, in the third period to stretch their lead to 9-2. At 13:55, Rakoczy notched his second of the game and Tota record his 200th career point when he assisted on Cantelli's goal at 4:49 off a broken play. Winterfeldt, a close defenseman, finished off the quarter with a man-down goal at the 2:06 mark. Hanson made it a 9-3 game at 12:06 of the fourth, but Tota and Wright answered with back-to-back goals for an 11-3 advantage with 7:35 remaining. The closing 4:30 of the game featured five penalties, three on Cortland, and hectic play. Van de Veerdonk and McNierney netted man-down goals just 21 seconds apart and DeOrdio scored an extra-man goal at 1:14 to pull Oneonta to within 11-6. Cortland won the ensuing faceoff and was able to run out the clock and seal the win.
