| CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Cortland men's lacrosse team, ranked sixth nationally
in Division III, defeated Oneonta, 14 5, Saturday night in SUNYAC action
and claimed the regular-season title with a perfect 7-0 conference mark.
The win was the 12th straight for the Red Dragons and raised their overall
record to 13-2 on the season. Oneonta fell to 9-8.
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on unassisted goals from freshman Kyle Lambert (Brentwood), sophomore Justin Miller (Syosset) and freshman Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee). Oneonta senior Brian Balash (Auburn) notched a man-up goal for Oneonta to make it 3-1, but then Cortland scored the next six goals to jump out to a 9-1 lead nearly midway through the third quarter. Balash netted his second goal to stop the run, but Cortland added three more goals in the final 1:33 of the third to increase its lead to 12-2. Junior Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored at 1:33, Lambert found the back of the net with seven second left in the quarter, and junior Andrew Pultz (Farmingdale), who won the ensuing faceoff scored with two-tenths of a second remaining on the clock. Oneonta outscored Cortland, 3-2, in the final quarter , as juniors James Battaglia (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs), Ryan Henry (West Babylon) and Arie Claflin (Syracuse/Corcoran) tallied goals. Hyatt and O'Connell accounted for Cortland's two goals. Senior Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) made 11 saves in 52:47 of action before giving way to senior Michael Draper (Massapequa Park/Massapequa), who stopped two shots. Junior Mike Louer (Islip) started in goal for Oneonta and registered 14 saves. Sophomore Leyland Davis (Huntington) played the final 6:52 and did not make a save. |
