March 2, 2003
The Game Story:
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Rob Russell (Madison, CT/Fairfield Prep) scored three goals and senior goalie Stephen Salotti (Geneva) made 20 saves as unranked St. Lawrence defeated fifth-ranked Cortland 10-3 in the season opener for both teams at Cornell University.

Junior Josh Feine (East Aurora/Nichols School) added two goals and an assist for the Saints, who finished last season with a 12-3 record and won the ECAC Upstate New York title. Senior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland, which advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals a year ago and finished with a 16-3 record.

Junior Peter Dolan (Princeton, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) scored off a Feine assist to give the Saints a 1-0 lead 6:51 into the first period. Cortland answered with a goal from senior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side), set up by sophomore Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse), to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:10 left in the period, but Russell's unassisted goal one minute later gave St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead.

Elvin tied the game for the Red Dragons 1:50 into the second period, but St. Lawrence rattled off the next four goals and never looked back. Russell stole a clearing pass from Cortland senior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and beat Feltmann one-on-one for an extra-man goal with 5:25 left in the half. Cortland was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty after the goal, and on the ensuing possession junior Tim Loveless (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) scored an extra-man goal off a Dolan assist. The Saints finished the run with two goals 21 seconds apart midway through the third period -- one by Russell and the other by junior Timmy Barnhorst (Kittery, ME/Holderness School).

Cortland's final goal came on an extra-man situation with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Junior Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) converted a pass from Elvin to draw the Red Dragons within 6-3. St. Lawrence, however, scored the final four goals -- two by Feine and one each by sophomore Alex Moore (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep) and junior Chris Hanbury (Glastonbury, CT). All four goals were unassisted.

Salotti made 12 of his 20 saves in the second half. Feltmann finished with eight saves. Cortland lost depsite outshooting St. Lawrence 37-27 and winning 11 of 16 faceoffs.
