Cortland State vs. Saint Lawrence

The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse)
scored four goals to lead nationally fifth-ranked Cortland to an 11-7 win
over 16th-ranked St. Lawrence in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon
at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Hughes became the 14th player in
school history to reach 100 career goals when he scored hos second of the
game in the second quarter.

Sophomore Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) added two goals and an assist and
five other Red Dragons chipped in with one goal each. Junior Matt O'Connell
(Camillus/West Genesee) picked up a pair of assists. Hughes added eight
ground balls, and sophomore Cheney Raymond (Camillus/West Genesee) and
junior Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) each collected six ground balls.
Junior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made 11 saves to earn the win
for Cortland (1-0).

Senior Alex Moore (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep) led the Saints with three
goals, while sophomores Nick Mastine (Erin, ON/Berkshire School) and
Brendan Lynch (Medfield, MA) scored two goals each and freshman Kevin
Russell (Madison, CT/Fairfield Prep) added three assists. Junior defenseman
Tripp Barlett (Plainfield, NJ/Delbarton School) and senior defenseman John
Loftus (Loudonville/Loomis Chafee) recorded six and five ground balls,
respectively. Sophomore Justin Demuth (Jordan/Jordan Elbridge) turned aside
12 shots in goal for St. Lawrence (2-1).

The Saints took an early 2-0 lead on scores from Moore and Lynch before
Cortland tied the score at 2-2 to end the first period on goals from Hughes
and Simensky. After Mastine put the Saints up 3-2 at the 9:22 mark of the
second quarter, Cortland reeled off five straight goals from five different
players to take a 7-3 lead at the half.

The Saints climbed back into the game, outscoring Cortland 3-1 in the third
quarter to pull to within 8-6. Moore scored twice and Mastine connected for
his second, while junior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) found the back of the net
for Cortland.

The Red Dragons put the game away with the first three goals of the fourth
quarter, the first from junior Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson) at 8:16
and the next two from Hughes at 3:46 and 2:45. Lynch scored at 1:44 to make
it 11-7, but the Saints failed to capitalize on three man-up opportunities
in the final 1:32.
