Cortland State vs. Stevens Tech
March 15, 2005
The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior attack Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored five goals,
including all three of Cortland's goals in the fourth quarter, as the
nationally fourth-ranked Red Dragons defeated 12th-ranked Stevens Tech, 8-5,
in the first-ever matchup between the schools. Cortland improves to 2-0 with
the win, while the Ducks drop to 3-1.

Senior attack Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) added two
goals and junior midfielder Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) recorded a
goal and an assist for the Red Dragons. Junior Ben Gaebel
(Deferiet/Carthage) made 12 saves.

Stevens was led by sophomore attack Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater,
NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and sophomore midfielder Alex Richards (Beaverton,
OR/Century), who scored two goals apiece. Sophomore netminder Jack
Dunderdale (Ridgefield, CT/Immaculate) stopped 12 shots.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead on first-quarter goals by Abbott and Lambert, the
latter assisted by Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee). Bielicky's
unassisted goal with 2:04 left in the period drew the Ducks within 2-1.

Stevens was successful on 20-of-23 clears in the game, but two of their
failures led directly to Cortland goals in the second quarter. An errant
clearing pass from behind the goal by a Stevens defenseman was picked up by
Lambert, who scored into an empty net with 6:51 left in the half. A little
more than three minutes later, a clearing pass by Dunderdale was knocked
down by Hughes, who recovered the ball and deposited it into the open net
for a 4-1 Red Dragon lead.

The guests responded, however, with the final two goals of the half.
Richards scored an unassisted goal with 2:23 remaining and Bielicky
converted an extra-man opportunity, assisted by Joe VanSickle (Hampton,
NJ/The Peddie School), with 44 seconds left.

Hughes scored off the first of two assists by sophomore Ryan Simensky
(Locust Valley) with 12:37 left, but Stevens stayed within a goal on a
Richards goal, set up by John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, NJ), with 6:34 left in
the quarter. Cortland took a two-goal lead again with 10:28 left in the game
when Lambert scored off a Simensky pass. Stevens once again pulled within a
goal on Patrick Bailey's (Manassas, VA/Osborne Park) tally with 7:34 left.
Lambert answered with an unassisted goal at the 5:59 mark to put Cortland
ahead by two.

Bielecky's shot with 4:24 left that could have closed the gap to a goal
bounced off the crossbar. The Red Dragons successfully cleared the ball and
maintained possession for about three minutes. Stevens got the ball back
with 1:22 left but turned it back over, and Lambert finished the scoring
with 1:08 left off an Abbott assist.
