The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Thirteen different players scored at least one goal as the nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Western New England University, 16-5, in non-conference action Thursday night at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 9-0 with the win, while the Golden Bears fell to 5-5.

Freshman Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) led the Cortland offense with six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) tallied two goals and one assist, junior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) scored twice, sophomores Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) and Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) each contributed one goal and one assist and eight others netted one goal apiece.

Senior Mike Kaminski (Sayville) started in goal, making eight saves through three quarters. Junior Steve Mahle (Camillus/West Genesee) played the fourth quarter and stopped four shots. Freshman Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 9-of-15 faceoffs and collected a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore Billy Davis (Manhasset) won 4-of-5 faceoffs. Senior Craig Sullivan (Duxbury, MA) and juniors Doug Meehan (Sayville) and J.T. Foltz (Auburn) each registered four ground balls.

Junior Adam Knapton (Canandaigua) paced Western New England with two goals. Junior Sean Lawton (Abington, MA) recorded one goal and one assist, seniors Nick Jez (Somers, CT) and Ryan Marcus (South Hadley, MA) each tallied a goal and junior Justin McKinney (Niskayuna) had one assist. Sophomore goalie Brandon Body (Newtown, CT) stopped 11 shots, and junior Jack Liacos (Beverly, MA) collected a game-high 10 ground balls.

The Red Dragons took control of the game early, grabbing a 5-0 lead after the first quarter as five different players found the back of the net with Hopps assisting on three of the scores. Cortland made it an 11-1 game at the half as Hopps added two goals and another assist during the second quarter.

Consul and Marcus traded goals in the third quarter to make it 12-2, before both teams went deep into their benches in the final quarter with Cortland out scoring the Golden Bears, 4-3, over the final 15 minutes for the 16-5 final.
