| CORTLAND, N.Y. ~V Cortland scored three goals in the final six minutes of the first half to break open a tight game, and the nationally second-ranked Red Dragons went on to defeat Brockport, 14-5, in a SUNYAC matchup. Cortland is now 11-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play, and has won six straight. The Golden Eagles drop to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the league. Senior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) led Cortland with three goals and junior Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) finished with two goals and two assists. Freshmen Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) and Chris Hannon (Baldwin) each scored twice and sophomore Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) added a goal and two assists. Junior Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made nine saves. Junior Chris Clemenson (Ovid/DeSales) paced Brockport witih two goals. Freshman Anthony Ventresca (Syracuse/Henninger), sophomore Joe Aqulina (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) and junior Matt Prentice (Auburn) scored one goal each. Freshman Matt Staalesen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) started in goal and made 13 saves. Senior Logan Gaffney (Lancaster) played the final 1:49, allowed one goal and did not record any saves. Hannon scored 2:08 into the game off a Simensky assist to give Cortland the early lead, but Brockport tied the game on Ventresca's goal with 3:59 left and the first quarter ended in a 1-1 tie. Sophomore defenseman Cheney Raymond (Camillus/West Genesee) scored his first goal of the season to recapture the lead for the Red Dragons 2:13 into the second quarter. Clemenson answered with 6:03 left in the half, however, to knot the game at 2-2. Cortland took the lead for good 41 seconds later when Abbott converted a pass from junior Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee). Abbott then assisted a Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson) goal at the 2:43 mark and scored off a Simensky feed with only four seconds remaining to put Cortland ahead 5-2 at halftime. The Red Dragons extended their lead with an O'Connell goal 42 seconds into the third quarter, followed by a Hughes tally with 8:16 left. Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) assisted on both of those goals. Brockport scored two of the final three goals in the quarter ~V an Aquilina goal at 5:17 and a Clemenson goal at the two-minute mark, sandwiched around a Hughes goal ~V to stay within 8-4 after three quarters. Cortland, however, kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard for the first 13:36 of the fourth quarter, enabling a 5-0 run that put the game away. Raymond assisted Hughes at the 11:37 mark, followed by Simensky scoring with 7:52 left and Hyde scoring at the 6:29 mark. Hannon and Hyde each added a goal to finish the run, with Abbott and Tim Castoro (Melville/Walt Whitman) picking up assists. Brockport broke the run on a Prentice goal with 1:24 left, and Drew Solomon (Plainedge) finished the scoring for Cortland with 16 seconds remaining. Cortland outshot Brockport in the contest, 60-20, and held a 58-35 ground ball advantage. Abbott won 9-of-15 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. |
