Denison vs. Ohio Wesleyan
March 27, 2004
The Game Story:
GRANVILLE-- Ohio Wesleyan scored the game-winning goal with 1:37 remaining in the fourth quarter to steal a 7-6 victory away from the Big Red in Denison's 2004 home opener.

After OWU's Kevin Lakani tied the game at 6-6 with 3:07 left, he struck again with heartbreaker a minute and a half later.

It was a back-and-forth contest the entire way through with OWU jumping out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Chad Pouliot in the first quarter. Denison's leading scorer Ted Douglass evened the score before the end of the quarter off an assist from Dean Scontras (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Before the half Denison's Craig Pastor (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Jordan Kilbury (Dublin, Ohio/Wellington School) would both find the back of the net however the Bishops would answer with two unanswered goals by Lakani and Chris Riehl to take a 4-3 lead into the break.

The third quarter was controlled by Denison as Scontras scored one goal off an assist by Pastor and freshman Rorry Smith (Middleburg, Va./Stevenson) scored Denison's lone man-up goal with 11:18 left in the quarter. The rest of the third period the defense held off all of the Bishops' offensive advances.

The fourth quarter was a different story. The quarter started off well for the Big Red as Graham Riley (Short Hills, N.J./Milburn School) scored on an unassisted goal with 10:56 left to put Denison up by two, 6-4. The tables would turn following John Schlegel's goal off a Lakani assist in a man-up situation. Lakani would strike again six minutes later with the tying score followed by the winner.

Denison goalie Tom Moriarty (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) finished with 11 saves on the day while Ohio Wesleyan's keeper, Paul McCommons stopped 13 Big Red shots. Denison held a 25-16 advantage in ground balls but were hurt by their performance in extra-man situations. The Big Red scored only once out of 11 extra man opportunities. Ohio Wesleyan was 1-of-3 in man-up situations.

Denison falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. OWU improves to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC.

The Big Red will be back in action on Wednesday, March 31 when they take on Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
