| The Game Story: | |||||
| The 19th ranked Denison men's lacrosse team followed up their 19-9 win over then No. 9 Lynchburg last Saturday with a strong 14-7 win over St. Mary's (Md.) this afternoon from The Severn School in Annapolis, Md. Denison improves to 3-1 with the win and will return to Granville in preparation for their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Wittenberg this Wednesday (March 25) at 7:30 p.m. from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. Nine different players accounted for Denison's 14 goals, but sophomore attack and current North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), managed to lead all scorers with a five-goal string that started at the 9:24 mark of the third quarter and lasted till there was just under 11 minutes to play in the fourth. Jones' five unanswered goals kept thoughts of a Seahawk comeback attempt at bay. Senior attack Nate Hall (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) assisted on three of those Jones goals. He also scored his eighth goal of the season in the fourth quarter which gave DU a 13-3 lead. Denison's only other multi-goal scorer was first-year Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) who netted two goals off eight shots. The Big Red were 2-for-4 in extra man opportunities. Their first came in the first quarter when junior Brady Burton scored off a pass from Cory Couture (San Diego, Calif./Coronado) to tie the game at 1-1. The second came mid-way through the third quarter on a Jones from Hall scoring play which kicked off Jones' scoring streak. DU scooped up 36 ground balls to St. Mary's 24 and the Big Red were a perfect 13-for-13 when clearing the ball. Junior Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) led the team in ground balls with seven and was 10-for-19 in face-off's. Rookie goalie Greg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched a career-high 11 saves and also added six ground balls in his second career start. |
