| ROCHESTER, NY (April 30, 2003) -- Jason Mordaci (pictured) and Brandon
Brown each scored four goals to lead Nazareth past Elmira 18-14 on
Wednesday, clinching the 2003 Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Title outright.
The Golden Flyers jumped out to 5-1 lead, scoring four consecutive goals in less than 2 minutes after Nazareth and Elmira exchanged goals to start the game. Andy Slotnick and Peter Whiteford scored extra-man goals 30 seconds apart to make the scord 5-3 with 8:04 remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Flyers got two goals by Chris Balash during a 4-1 Nazareth run to make the lead 9-4 with 13:23 left in the first half. Elmira came soaring back with 7 of the next 8 goals to draw even, 10-10, with 10:21 remaining in the third quarter. Mordaci and Bryan Coon scored to give the Golden Flyers a 12-10 lead, but goals by Slotnick and Jeremy Hobbs tied the game 12-12 with just under threee and half minutes left in the third quarter. Mordaci and Brown scored inside the last 1:20 of the third quarter to give the Golden Flyers the lead for good, 14-12. Slotnick scored 3 goals and added an assist to lead Elmira (4-9, 3-3 E8). Scott Campbell and Scot McClelland each added 2 goals and 2 assists. Kevin Welinsky made 13 saves in goal. Coon scored 3 goals and had 2 assists for the Golden Flyers (11-3, 7-0 E8). Balash scored 2 goals and Brian Navarra and Jim Quackenbush each had a goal and 2 assists. Don Green made 10 saves in goal. Nazareth will find out its seeding in this year's NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday. |
