|Elmira, NY– The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team dominated the Redhawks of La Roche College 19-8 on Saturday afternoon at Elmira Free Academy. With the win the Soaring Eagles start off the year 1-0, while the loss drops the Redhawks to 0-3.|
In the beginning the Soaring Eagles came out strong causing many La Roche turnovers and getting several ground balls. At the 3:45 mark of the first quarter Jackson Correia '14 (Simsbury, CT -- The Masters School) scored the first goal of the game being assisted by Dustin Gatt '14 (Welland, ONT -- Notre Dame College). EC went on to score three more times in the quarter before the Redhawks finally responded at the 13:06 mark. With 10 seconds left in the quarter Mike DeMar '15 (Macedon, NY -- Palmyra Macedon) registered his first goal as a Soaring Eagle to put EC up 5-1. Assisting on the play was Brady Richards '14 (Cortice, ONT -- The Hill Academy). In the second quarter the scoring stayed even with each team scoring three more goals and taking the game to 8-4 at halftime.
In the start of the third quarter the Soaring Eagles struggled to find the back of the net. Neither team scored a goal until the 9:47 mark when TJ White '12 (Collegeville, PA -- Methacton) put it in the back of the net with David Evert '14 (Niagara Falls, NY -- Niagara Wheatfield) assisting on the play. The Redhawks would try to respond scoring a goal two minutes later, but EC dominated the rest of the game outscoring La Roche 9-3.
White and DeMar were the leading scorers for EC with five goals each. White also recorded four assists and retrieved five ground balls, while DeMar tallied three assists and three ground balls. Also playing well was Evert who contributed four goals, five assists and four ground balls. Dave Bucchino '13 (Cedar Grove, NJ -- Bow) and Mike Knowlton '14 (Manchester, ME -- Maranacook) split time in the net for EC combining for 13 saves, while La Roche goalie Eugene LaBorde made 10 saves.
