MADISON, NJ - Junior midfielder Paul Colflesh tallied two goals and three assists to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 9-7 victory over USMMA in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 1-0 while the Mariners dropped to 0-1.

FDU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with just 5:36 gone by in the first quarter and Colflesh was involved in all three goals. He scored the first and third goal and assisted on the second goal scored by sophomore attack Cody McHugh. USMMA came right back to cut it to 3-2 before sophomore midfielder Cory Weiss made it 4-2 to end the first quarter. The Mariners ripped off four goals in a row to begin the second quarter to grab a 6-4 advantage. FDU notched the final two goals of the half as Weiss and senior attack Drew Canfield scored to tie the game at 6-6 heading into intermission.

The Devils began the third quarter by scoring two more goals to take an 8-6 lead as Canfield and junior midfielder Adam Koontz found the back of the net. USMMA cut it to one, 8-7, with 4:08 left in the third but FDU got an insurance goal early in the fourth quarter as junior midfielder Pat O'Brien scored off a feed from Colflesh to make it 9-7 with 13:42 remaining. Each team had chances down the stretch but the FDU defense stood tall and turned away a Mariner onslaught with two minutes left to preserve the victory.

Canfield and McHugh finished with two goals apiece while Weiss had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Dino Vitale won his first collegiate start, making 10 saves. Freshman midfielder Billy Deignan was dominant on faceoffs, winning 15-of-19 while picking up 12 ground balls.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at home against Haverford beginning at 7 pm.
