| LANCASTER, PA --- The sixth-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse team
handed 10th-ranked Franklin & Marshall its first loss of the season,
topping the Diplomats, 9-7, this afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
The Shoremen improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the
Diplomats slip to 8-1 and 3-1.
F&M struck first in the game as Bas Solleveld scored an unassisted goal with 12:53 to go in the first quarter. The Shoremen tied things up exactly one minute later as sophomore midfielder Topher Brewer (Wilton, CT/Vermont Academy, VT) found senior attackman Chris Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) for a goal. The Shoremen pulled ahead, 2-1, with 10:10 to go in the quarter on a goal by junior midfielder Randy Vane (Sparks, MD/Gilman School) which was assisted by junior midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT), but the Diplomats tied things up at 2-2 when Colin Hanley scored an unassisted goal with 6:22 left in the period. The Diplomats opened up a 4-2 lead in the second quarter as Bryan Nolan scored with 12:08 on the clock and Solleveld fed Steve Welsh for a goal with 7:07 left. The Shoremen battled back to tie the score by halftime as Edwards scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Ryan Morrison (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset/Salisbury School, CT) with 4:23 left and junior midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored off a Brewer assist with 1:36 on the clock. F&M opened the third quarter scoring exactly one minute into the period as Welsh fed Solleveld to make it 5-4. The Shoremen answered with 12:29 to go when junior midfielder Steve Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) rifled in an unassisted goal. Washington took a 6-5 lead with 9:46 left in the quarter when Berger found Edwards for a goal, but the Diplomats tied things up again with 8:27 left on a goal by Beau Smith. Renner gave the Shoremen the lead for good at 7-6 with an unassisted goal with 5:45 remaining in the third. The score remained 7-6 until the 5:45 mark of the fourth quarter when Renner scored another unassisted goal to make it 8-6. Edwards scored off a Berger assist just 27 seconds later to give the Shoremen a commanding 9-6 lead with 5:27 remaining. Welsh rounded out the scoring with a goal for F&M that came off an assist from Vandy Vanderwalker with eight seconds on the clock. Washington junior goalie Richard Yost (Westminster, MD/St. Paul's) made 13 saves, including six in the final period. Edwards led the WC offense with four goals. Renner tallied three goals, while Berger added a goal and two assists. Welsh led F&M with two goals and two assists. Solleveld finish with two goals and one assist. The Shoremen are back in action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Haverford. |
