Geneseo State vs. Plattsburgh

The Game Story:
GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team trailed by two at halftime, but Geneseo doubled up the Cardinals in the second half to hand them a 16-10 loss and snap a five-game win streak in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Plattsburgh (10-6, 4-2 SUNYAC) secures the No. 3 seed for the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament, while Geneseo (5-7, 5-1 SUNYAC) takes the No. 2 seed.

The Blue Knights attacked early as Jeff Watson scored the first goal of the afternoon with just 49 seconds gone in the game. Joe Kramer evened the score at the 12:19 mark before giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead at 9:26 with a man-up goal from Anthony Pafundi.

Geneseo’s Brendan Kurpis tied it at 2-all with 8:11 left in the first quarter but Kramer scored again to keep the Cardinals up by a goal. Kurpis and James Purpura tallied back-to-back goals to give the Blue Knights a 4-3 lead but with 1:36 left, Pafundi converted a man-up opportunity for Plattsburgh to end the first quarter tied at 4-4.

Two goals within the first four minutes of the second allowed Geneseo to take a lead they would not relinquish. Plattsburgh cut the deficit to 6-5 at the 8:00 mark of the second when Kramer netted his fourth of the afternoon but that was as close as the Cardinals would come.

The Cardinals trailed 8-6 at the half but Geneseo held Plattsburgh to four goals in the second half to get the win.

Kramer led the Plattsburgh offense with four goals. Tim Lawrence scored two goals and added an assist. Nick Travers tallied a pair of goals while Pafundi finished the day with a goal and an assist. Nick Parrella scooped up six groundballs and Ryan Phillips had three caused turnovers.

Steven Cregan paced the Blue Knights with a goal and four assists. Kurpis scored four goals while Purpura, Watson and John Wettack each added a pair of goals. Frank DiSanto had a team-high seven groundballs and won 16 faceoffs. Kyle Kerrigan caused three turnovers.

Penalties caused the Cardinals some problems as Plattsburgh took nine penalties for nine minutes. Geneseo was 3-for-8 on extra-man opportunities while the Cardinals were 4-for-6.

Geneseo outshot Plattsburgh, 38-33, and picked up 37 groundballs while the Cardinals had 28.

Plattsburgh’s Gordie Gehring made 11 saves in the loss. Michael Greubel recorded 10 stops to get the win for Geneseo.

The No. 3 Cardinals, who are making their second appearance in the conference tournament, return to No. 2 Geneseo Wednesday for a SUNYAC semifinal matchup. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
