March 12, 2008
The Game Story:
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) notched his fourth straight hat trick to open the season and No. 2 Gettysburg held off a second-half Ohio Wesleyan rally en route to a 12-7 victory in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at a windy Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Gettysburg (4-0) never trailed after outscoring the Battling Bishops 6-0 to start the game. Ohio Wesleyan (1-3) pulled to within 8-5 early in the fourth quarter, but Gettysburg scored a pair of goals eight seconds apart midway through the period to keep the visitors at bay.

Brody, who scored all of his goals in the fourth quarter, also handed out one assist to finish with four points. Seniors Ben Sufrin (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep (Md.)) added two goals and one assist apiece while junior Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) tacked on a goal and two assists.

Nick Gallagher and Steve Fowler led Ohio Wesleyan with two goals apiece.

The Bullets out-shot the Bishops 21-9 in the first half while building a 6-1 lead. Six different players accounted for Gettysburg’s six scores before Craig Aronoff put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard with 3:57 left in the half.

Junior Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) made it a 7-1 game when he scored a little over a minute into the second half before the Bishops went on a 3-0 run over a 4:45 stretch to cut the gap to three. Chaz Narwicz started the run with an even-strength goal before Fowler (man-up) and Gallagher (man-down) converted special teams tallies.

Sufrin snapped the run for Gettysburg, taking a feed from junior Tom O'Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College) and scoring his second goal of the game with 1:46 left in the third quarter, making it an 8-4 game heading into the final stanza.

The Battling Bishops pulled to within 8-5 when Fowler scored 1:49 into the fourth quarter, but that’s when Dyer and Brody accounted for Gettysburg’s two quick strikes to push the Orange & Blue’s lead back to five. OWU was unable to draw closer than four the rest of the way.

Junior Charles Floeckher (Lutherville, Md./Boys Latin School) played 50:37 in goal to earn his fourth win of the season for Gettysburg. He finished with four saves while yielding four goals. Classmate Zachary Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) played 9:23 in the third quarter and surrendered three goals.

Ryan Perrone played the opening 43:13 between the pipes for the Bishops and gave up eight goals while making seven saves. Jud Hall turned aside two shots while allowing four goals over the final 16:46.

Gettysburg plays its Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, when it hosts No. 9 Haverford College at 1 p.m.
