|The Game Story:|
|EMMITTSBURG, Md. – Senior Chris Cahill tied a career-high with four goals and handed out one assist and the 16th-ranked Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse team defeated Merchant Marine Academy 21-7 at Mount St. Mary’s University’s Waldron Family Stadium Tuesday evening.|
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Gettysburg Tuesday afternoon but was moved after officials were not present for the start of the game. After a delay it became too late to start at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium, which does not have lights.
Gettysburg (3-2), which posted its highest scoring output since a 21-2 win over Marymount on March 14, 2007, outshot the Mariners 56-16. The Bullets raced to an 8-0 lead, then settled any doubt with an 11-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to go up 21-3 after three quarters of play.
Junior Dylan Schmitz added three goals for the Bullets while freshman Martin Manilla collected two goals and two assists. Senior J.C. Ward added two goals and one assist while senior Danno Lynch, senior Andrew Ryan, and sophomore Evan Thomas each had two goals.
Senior Zach Gray led Merchant Marine (1-2) with five goals.
The Bullets used three different goalies, with sophomore starter J.T. McCook getting the win while playing the opening 35:02. He yielded three goals and was not credited with a save. Freshman Jon Maddalone turned aside one shot over a scoreless 16:36 while classmate Mike Smith, making his collegiate debut, also had one save while letting in four goals in the final 8:22.
Freshman Shawn Kane started for the Mariners in the cage and made six saves in 22:22. Classmate Pat Sullivan stopped 12 shots over 37:38.
Gettysburg won 23-of-29 face-offs, with sophomore Nick Avedisian winning 8-of-9 and freshman Wes Lincoln going 8-for-8.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, when they take on No. 4 SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa, N.Y. on Long Island.
