Gordon vs. Salem State

The Game Story:
WENHAM, MA. -- Gordon jumped out to a 5-0 first period lead over visiting Salem State, and never trailed, winning their home opener 12-9 on a beautiful day at the Brigham Athletic Center.

Zac Blue led all players with 5 goals, including the first 2 of the contest. Joel Derechinsky, Andrew Kirkaldy, and Dan Utz all tallied in the first period, giving Gordon their commanding early lead. Blue scored twice more in the second period, but the visiting Vikings began to get their offense untracked. Jonathan Falls got on the board at the 7:04 mark of the second period, and Robert Mulroy and Justin Jones scored late in the second stanza to make the score 7-3 at the break.

The Vikings had more offensive success in the 3rd period as they scored 4 times, but were unable to substantially cut into the Gordon lead at any point. Kirkaldy and Derechinsky both picked up their second goals of the game in the 3rd period, and James Blue and Danny Mack also scored.

Leading 11-7 going into the 4th period, Gordon managed to keep the Vikings at bay. Salem State crept within 11-8 on Fall's 3rd goal of the game, but got no closer the rest of the way.

Tyler Humpton played the first 30 minutes of the game in net for Gordon a picked up 5 saves en route to the win. Freshman Houston Zemanski saw his first collegiate action in the second half and made 3 saves. Brendan Gill had 12 saves in a losing effort for the Vikings.

Gordon moves to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Maryland to face Goucher on Tuesday at 3:30PM.
