Gordon vs. Univ Of New England
March 15, 2008
The Game Story:
WENHAM, Mass., March 15, 2008 – Gordon College sophomore midfielder Andrew Kirkaldy (Red Deer, Alb., Can.) scored three times and registered six assists as the Fighting Scots rolled to an 18-3 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) season opener for both sides this afternoon in cold, snowy conditions at the Brigham Athletic Complex in Wenham.

The Fighting Scots (2-2, 1-0) struck first as senior defensive midfielder Trevor Peterson (West Lebanon, N.H.) scored a short-handed unassisted goal with 11:57 remaining in the first quarter. The Scots would add five more in the first frame including two each from sophomore attack Joel Derechinsky (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman midfielder Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, Ont., Can.). Fighting Scots junior attack Drew Straton (Carmel, Ind.) also got on the board for the first time this season on an assist from Kirkaldy to put the home team up 6-0 after one.

The Nor’easters (1-3, 0-1) got on the board early in the second quarter when junior midfielder Robert Labbe (Lewiston, Maine) took advantage of a man-advantage opportunity and found the back of the net with 12:02 to play in the half to make it a 6-1 contest. The Fighting Scots would add two more before the intermission as Kirkaldy hit the back of the cage on an unassisted tally and then helped out freshman midfielder Dan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) on a man-up opportunity to make it 8-1 in favor of the Scots at the half.

The Fighting Scots would score the first five goals of the third quarter as MacIntosh and Kirkaldy each tallied a pair along with junior midfielder Ben Forsberg (Newcastle, Del.) to put the game out of reach 13-1. UNE would add one goal in the third quarter as sophomore attack Steven Beem (Barre, Vt.) connected with junior midfielder Mike Nawrocki (Baldwin, Md.). GC, however, would continue to pile on the goals despite one more finish from the Nor’easters with just under a minute to play in the contest but it was not enough as the Scots rolled to an 18-3 victory.

The Fighting Scots controlled much of the contest winning 12-of-18 face-offs as sophomore midfielder Jake Patterson (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was 9-for-11 on draws. The Scots’ defense also made things difficult on the Nor’easters as UNE cleared just 10 of 23 attempts.

MacIntosh finished with four goals while Derechinsky and Kirkaldy added three apiece and Patterson came away with nine ground balls. In goal for the Scots, freshman Brett Becker (Sparta, N.J.) earned the win with seven saves in three quarters. On the other end, UNE net minder Andrew Briggs (Scituate, R.I.) stopped 17 shots.

The Fighting Scots will travel to Hoboken, N.J. on Tuesday (March 18) afternoon to take on 23rd ranked Stevens Tech at 1:00 p.m.
