The Game Story:
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore attacker Owen Caruso (Port Washington, NY) scored a career high four goals to lead the top-seeded Western New England to a 17-3 victory over fifth-seeded Gordon in a semifinal round game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men’s Lacrosse Championship Wednesday afternoon (May 2).

The Golden Bears, who are ranked 16th in the USILA Division III Poll, will host second-seeded Roger Williams (a 12-6 winner over third-seeded Endicott) at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (May 5) in the conference championship game.

Western New England (11-4) held a commanding 54-21 advantage in shots and outscored Gordon 9-0 in the second half to advance to the CCC final for the fourth time in the last five years.

Junior attacker Corbett Corrigan Harreys (Essex, CT) contributed three goals and two assists while senior midfielder Joe O’Keefe (Branford, CT) added three goals and an assist. Senior attacker Patrick White (Milton, MA) chipped-in with two goals and two assists. Junior midfielder James Reardon (Longmeadow, MA) had a goal and three assists.

Western New England dominated the face-offs by a 19-6 margin with senior midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) taking 15-of-17 with nine ground balls.

Senior goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled eight saves in 43 minutes, 17 seconds to raise his record to 6-3. Freshman Brandon Body (Newtown, CT) played the final 16:43 and stopped three shots.

Caruso gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the game before freshman midfielder Matt Dantona (Syosset, NY) tied the score 59 seconds later. Caruso fired in his second goal at the 11:25 mark and O’Keefe found the net at 9:17 to give WNE a 3-1 lead after the opening period.

After the teams traded goals early in the second stanza, senior midfielder Wes Chittick (Glenside, PA) pulled the Fighting Scots within 4-3 with 6:07 left before the break.

Western New England reeled off the last four goals of the quarter, including the first goal of the season by sophomore long stick middie Jack Liacos (Beverly, MA), to take an 8-3 lead at intermission.

Harreys tallied a pair of goals in the first 6:01 of the third period as the Golden Bears stretched their margin to 13-3 heading into the final period. Freshman attacker Garrett Mullins (Jefferson Township, NJ) notched his first collegiate goal in the fourth quarter.

Dantona finished with a goal and assist for Gordon while sophomore long stick middie Ian Knechtle (New Canaan, CT) picked-up seven ground balls. Junior goalie Houston Zemanski (Annapolis, MD) made 12 saves.
