Goucher vs. Catholic
April 17, 2004
The Game Story:
TOWSON, MD - James Clement III (Dallas, TX/Episcopal School) and Pat Tracy (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) both scored four goals today in leading Goucher past Catholic, 12-9, in the opening round of the 2004 Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament.

The victory sends the Gophers (7-7) into the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Salisbury on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Sea Gull Stadium. Although the Gophers raised their all-time record against Catholic to 8-0 with today's win, they never were able to shake the Cardinals (8-5) until the fourth period. The score was tied 2-2 after one period and 4-4 at halftime. The Gophers struck for three goals, including Tracy's third goal of the contest, during the first five minutes of the third quarter to open up a 7-4 lead, but the Cardinals answered with the final three goals of the period, pulling even at 7-7 on a goal by Colin Whitaker with 3:06 showing on the clock. Clement tallied his third goal of the game 1:20 into the fourth quarter to put Goucher ahead 8-7, but a Justin Kelly-from-Whitaker goal less than two minutes later created an 8-8 tie.

The Gophers, 17-5 winners when the two teams squared off back on April 3, went ahead to stay on a goal by Mike Zirrolli (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) with 9:03 left to play and started to pull away from there. Clement and Tracy both scored their fourth goals of the contest midway through the final period before an unassisted goal by Matt Wilson (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) provided Goucher with a 12-8 lead with 6:08 remaining.

Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park School) picked up assists on all four of Tracy's goals and now has 15 assists in the Gophers' last four games. Whitaker supplied the Cardinals with three goals and an assist, while Mike Finegan tallied a goal and was awarded three assists.

Goucher's Jerod Richardson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) won 16 of the 21 face-offs he attempted and, in the process, broke the single-season school record of 152 face-offs won. The freshman face-off specialist has won 161 of the 275 face-offs he has attempted for the Gophers in 2004.
