|The Game Story:|
| TOWSON, MD -- Chris Wathey (Sr., South Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's)
factored in five of Franklin & Marshall College's six goals as he scored
three times and handed out two assists as the #10 nationally ranked
Diplomats downed Goucher 6-3 in men's lacrosse.|
F&M (5-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) jumped out to a 5-1 advantage midway through the second period.
Wathey scored twice in the first period and notched his third goal of the contest before picking up assists on goals by Vandy Vanderwarker (Sr., Keswick, VA/STAB) and Sean Duffy (So., Springfield, PA/Archmere Academy) in the second period. Duffy's goal extended the Diplomats' lead to 5-1 with 8:23 remaining before halftime as an unassisted goal by Ned Phillips accounted for all of the Gophers' scoring in the first half.
The Gophers (4-4) closed to within 5-2 in the third period on an unassisted goal by James Clement III. In the fourth quarter, Colin Hanley (Jr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) restored F&M's lead to four goals by scoring with 3:54 remaining and Clement tallied another unassisted goal with 2:26 showing on the clock to close out the scoring. In addition, Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) tacked on three assists as he now has four goals and seven assists for 11 points over the last two games following a four goal-four assist performance versus Denison in a 12-10 win on March 20 at Loyola College.
Between the pipes, F&M goalie Mike Sartorius (Jr., Summit, NJ/Summit) made 14 saves off 20 Goucher shots, while the Gophers' Reeves Craig stopped 16 shots to become only the fourth goalkeeper in the history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program to surpass 400 saves during his career.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on March 27 at home versus Ursinus College in the team's Centennial Conference season opener. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Williamson Field.
