|TOWSON, MD - Goucher assembled a 15-0 lead today on the way to a 20-2|
triumph over Marymount and the Gophers' seventh consecutive victory
in the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference championship
With the win, the Gophers (9-4) advance to the tournament semifinals
where they will host the winner of Saturday's first-round game
between York and St. Mary's (Md.).
When the Gophers played Marymount during the regular season, they
bolted out to a 9-0 lead and then watched the Saints score the final
five goals of the contest.
Today, head coach Kyle Hannan's squad again assumed a 9-0 advantage,
this time on an unassisted goal by Mike Zirrolli (Annapolis,
MD/Broadneck) with 9:40 still left to play in the second quarter.
They tacked on five more goals to bump their lead to 14-0 at the half
and then went up 15-0 on an unassisted goal by Binz Hansen (Roswell,
GA/McCallie) early in the third period.
The Saints (4-12) finally got on the scoreboard with 5:48 remaining
in the third quarter on an unassisted goal by Nick Hoefer.
Thirteen different players scored goals for Goucher, which finished
with a 55-19 edge in shots. Brent Shea (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and
Omar DuPree (Baltimore, MD/North County) both contributed three goals
and an assist to the victory. Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) supplied the Gophers with a goal and four assists.
