| TOWSON, MD — With the score tied at 6-6, Goucher struck for two quick goals in the final minute of the third quarter and then outscored Randolph-Macon, 3-0, in the final period to secure an 11-6 non-conference victory over the Yellow Jackets today. An unassisted goal by Randolph-Macon's Tyler Watkins with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter created the 6-all tie, which held up until an unassisted goal by Mike Zirrolli (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) put the Gophers (4-2) ahead with :53 showing on the clock. Goucher's Chris Webber (East Wallingford, VA/Kimball Union Academy) won the ensuing faceoff, leading to a goal by Bryant Boucher (North Wales, PA/North Penn) that provided the home team with an 8-6 advantage through three periods. Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, MD/Park School) notched his fourth goal of the contest 5:25 into the final stanza, extending Goucher's lead to 9-6. Goals by James Clement III (Dallas, TX/Episcopal School) and Omar DuPree (Baltimore, MD/North County) had Goucher on top, 2-0, after one period. The Yellow Jackets (1-2) assumed their only lead of the contest on a goal by Paul Johnsen midway through the second quarter that made the score 4-3, but the Gophers would pull even before halftime on an unassisted goal by Nochumowitz. Goucher finished with a 45-29 edge in shots, forcing the two goalkeepers to make a total of 31 saves. Brian Vierheller, who went the distance in goal for Randolph-Macon, was credited with 19 saves, while Goucher's Reeves Craig (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) stopped 12 shots, raising his total for the season to 86 saves. Webber, a preseason Division III All-American defenseman, posted some impressive numbers in the victory: in addition to scoring a goal in the fourth quarter, he won 10 of the 12 face-offs he attempted and scooped up 13 ground balls. |
