Ingram Finishes With Two Goals and a Pair of Helpers

TOWSON, Md. — For only the second time since the formation of the Landmark Conference, the men's lacrosse championship game will not include Goucher, as the Gophers fell 6-5 today to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

In its sixth straight semifinal, Goucher (8-8) got off to a rocky start, conceding the first goal of the contest to Merchant Marine (9-7) midfielder Troy Smith 7:45 into the contest.

Dylan Zook (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) leveled for the Gophers under two minutes later, sending the teams into the second quarter tied.

The next five goals, however, belonged to the Mariners, as Alex Cline and Joseph Purcell struck in the second quarter to wrap up the first half 4-2.

The Mariner run continued as the first three goals of the second half all went the way of the visitors, pushing the lead to 6-1.

The Gophers, however, would not go quietly. The team took more than enough shots to cut the deficit, holding a remarkable 28-6 edge from that point forward, covering the final 21:01.

Pierce Ingram (Austin, Texas/Westwood) took a pass from Zook late in the third quarter to finally break Goucher's 32:58 scoreless drought and stop the Merchant Marine run.

Ingram set up the next goal, feeding Sam Morgan (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) to cut the lead to 6-3 with 8:22 remaining.

Ingram didn't waste much time cutting the lead to two, scoring an unassisted goal 40 seconds later, his team-high 26th marker of the year.

The momentum continued as Goucher got within one courtesy of Zook with 5:07 left. The attackman fired a shot from a difficult angle after a pass from Ingram to bring the crowd back to life.

Over the remaining period of the game, Goucher managed to get four shots off, forcing three Kevin Young saves, but the Gophers were unable to get it by the freshman goalkeeper to force overtime.

Young finished with 23 saves, a career high.

On the defensive end, Bryce Carson (Wyomissing, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) forced four turnovers and earned four ground balls. In net, Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) made nine saves.

This marks the first time since the formation of the Landmark that the Gophers have lost to Merchant Marine.

The only other time Goucher lost in the semifinals was in 2009, when the top seeded Gophers fell to Scranton. The Royals lost in the championship game to Merchant Marine.

The No. 4 Mariners will face No. 3 Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference title game on Saturday. No team seeded lower than second has ever won the Landmark title.
