And now that elusive first win won't come for at least another year because, in the first meeting between the two in-state rivals since 1996, the Green Terror knocked off the Gophers, 12-11, in front of a crowd of 166 persons this afternoon on Beldon Field. The Green Terror (1-4) came out of the first quarter of today's contest up 4-1 by out-shooting the Gophers, 13-3, and picking up twice as many ground balls, 10-5. Goucher's only goal of the period was scored by Steve Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) while McDaniel was down a man due to a 30-second penalty for pushing. Another man-up goal by Patterson, followed by even-strength goals from Dylan Zook (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and Sam Morgan (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) allowed the Gophers (1-4) to pull even with the Green Terror at 4-4 midway through the second quarter. McDaniel went back in front two times during the final 6:36 of the first half, but each time Goucher answered as the score was knotted up at 6-6 after 30 minutes. Goucher went ahead for the first time when Patterson tallied his third goal of the contest 1:16 into the third quarter, but six of the next seven goals belonged to McDaniel as the Green Terror assumed a 12-8 advantage on an unassisted goal by Matt Dupras with :37 remaining in the period. With just :11 showing on the clock, however, Patterson stuck another extra-man goal to bring his team to within 12-9, and hike his personal total for the game to five goals. Just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Gophers closed to within 12-10 on a goal by Zook. Neither team scored again until Zachary Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) netted an unassisted goal with :30 remaining to make it a one-goal game. Tristan Morris (Houston, Texas/Houston Christian) did win the ensuing faceoff, but the only shot Goucher got off during the closing seconds off the contest was wide of the target. Both starting goalkeepers played all 60 minutes. For Goucher, Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) made five save in the opening quarter and ended the contest with a total of 13; for McDaniel, Christian Dallmus also ended up with 13 saves, eight of which were in the second period. The Green Terror finished with a 46-30 edge in shots and held a 39-30 advantage in ground balls. The two teams met five times from 1992-96 and McDaniel won all five of those contests. |
