March 8, 2003
The Game Story:
Greensboro, NC - Patrick Stringer scored four of DeSales' last five goals, including the game-winner with 8:22 left, to lead the visiting Bulldogs past Guilford, 12-11, Saturday. DeSales (1-0) overcame an early 5-2 deficit and hung on down the stretch to avenge last year's 11-10 defeat to the Quakers.

Brian Bottini set up Stringer's final goal that gave DeSales a 12-9 lead. Chip Hill and Matt Wagner scored for Guilford (1-2) 19 seconds apart to pull the Quakers within 12-11, but goalie Joe Kots and his fellow defenders protected the lead. Guilford had a number of good scoring chances in the final minute, including a point-blank shot by Josh Miller with 42 seconds left that Kots deflected away.

Miller scored all three of his goals in the first period and helped the hosts grab a 5-2 edge. His illegal stick penalty at the start of the second quarter led to two extra-man goals by Bottini and Nat Mezzaferro that put the Bulldogs right back in the game. The power-play goals triggered a 9-2 DeSales run into the third quarter that gave the guests an 11-7 lead with 3:17 left in the third quarter. Stringer scored four of his game-high five goals during the run.

Stringer finished with five goals and two assists, while Bottini added three scores and four helpers. Kots overcame a sluggish start to finish with eight saves.

Miller paced the Quakers with three goals and four assists. Sophomore Matt Wagner scored three goals and two assists Guilford, including two of the team's five extra-man scores.
