| Greensboro, NC -- Junior attackman Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park School) scored four goals and four assists in visiting Goucher's 16-5 men's lacrosse victory over Guilford Friday in both team's season opener. The Gophers (1-0) broke open a 1-1 game midway in the second half with a 10-1 burst over two periods that gave the guests an 11-2 edge with 10:50 left in the third quarter. Flamholz, junior Bryant Boucher (North Wales, PA/North Penn) and junior Brent Shea (Fallston, MD/Fallston) netted two goals apiece during the decisive run. Guilford's Jarrett Ziegler (Youngsville, NC/Southeast Raleigh) briefly stopped the spurt with his team-high second goal of the game, but the Gophers responded with four straight tallies, two by Flamholz, that made it a 15-3 game with 6:38 to play. Boucher finished with three goals and an assist for Goucher, which outshot the Quakers, 43-23. Shea added two goals and one assist. Junior Mike Zirrolli (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) twice dent the twine for the visitors. Freshman Austin Hayes (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) played the first three quarters in goal and made five of Goucher's nine saves. Junior Jerrod Richardson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) won 12 of his 24 face-offs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls. Guilford sophomore goalie Andrew Vigne (Concord, MA/Middlesex) made six of the Quakers' (0-1) nine saves and picked up a team-best six ground balls in two quarters. Junior Andrew Bond (Littleton, CO/J.K. Mullen) filled the cage in the second half and made three stops. The Quakers return to action Sunday (2/19) against visiting Catholic at 1:00 p.m. The Gophers visit Virginia Wesleyan Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. |
