Guilford vs. Manhattanville
February 20, 2004
The Game Story:
Greensboro, NC -- Senior attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) scored two of his four goals during a decisive 6-0 second-half run to lift Guilford past visiting Manhattanville, 13-10, in the men's lacrosse season opener for both teams. The win marked the first for Guilford head coach John Burke '88 in his Quakers' coaching debut and Guilford's (1-0) fifth straight season-opening win.

Guilford grabbed an early 3-1 lead on two of junior Matt Wagner's (Mill Valley, CA/Marin Catholic) team-high five goals. Manhattanville (0-1) tied the game late in the first quarter on Jim Seymour's (Freeport, NY/Freeport) first two tallies. Seymour, a junior midfielder, finished with a game-high six goals on the day.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter and into the third before Guilford reeled off five straight goals to end the third quarter. Junior Ed Massello's (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) score capped the 6-0 run and opened the fourth-quarter scoring. His goal gave the Quakers an 11-5 edge with 13:31 remaining. Miller (2g, 1a) and Wagner (1g, 2a) each had three points during Guilford's spurt.

The Valiants' rallied to within three goals with 8:53 to play after Andy Nagy (Gardiner, ME/Kent Hills Prep) scored to make it a 12-9 game. Guilford's Miller answered with his fourth and final goal off of one of Won Hill's (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) three assists for a 13-9 Quakers' edge with 7:27 left. Seymour's sixth score with 4:45 remaining provided the game's final margin. Guilford effectively held the ball down the stretch, which limited the Valiants' scoring chances.

Wagner finished with a game- and career-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Miller matched Wagner's seven points and passed Chris Lang '94 for fourth place on the Quakers' career assists chart with 70. Senior Chip Hill (Sellersville, PA/Central Bucks West) added two goals and two assists. Junior goalie Aaron Skiles (Weirton, VA/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) recorded eight of his 13 saves in the third quarter. Won Hill had a team-high eight ground balls and won nine of 16 face-offs.

Seymour paced Manhattanville's offense with his six goals. Rookie Mike Oswald (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) added two goals and two assists. Classmate Matt O'Brien (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) won eight of 15 draws and led the Valiants with five ground balls.

Guilford hosts Wooster in a nonconference match February 29. Manhattanville concludes its season-opening North Carolina trip at Queens tomorrow.
