| Greensboro, N.C. -- Sophomore midfielder Matt Meriwether (Charlottesville, Va./Tandem Friends) scored a career-high three goals and an assist in Guilford College's 8-5 nonconference lacrosse victory over visiting Oberlin Sunday in the Armfield Athletic Center. His game-best four points also mark a personal high. Meriwether's first goal broke a 1-1 tie late in the first quarter and gave Guilford (2-4) the lead for good. Junior attackman Todd Bochenek (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) set up Meriwether's second goal, which ended a 2-0 Oberlin (0-5) spurt and upped the Quakers' lead to 5-3 at halftime. Meriwether assisted on sophomore Gareth Fuller's (University Park, Md./Princess Anne) goal 2:25 into the second half and tallied just under three minutes later to open a 7-3 Guilford lead. Yeomen rookies Erik Strand (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and Nick Sherman (Los Angeles, Calif./Saint Monica) scored back-to-back goals later in the third period to pull Oberlin within 7-5. Guilford junior Colin Davis (Brewster, Mass./St Mark's) closed out the scored with a nifty behind-the-back goal after picking up a loose ball in the crease with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. Fuller scored twice for Guilford and Bochenek finished with a game-high three assists. Junior defender Tyler Harrison (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) scored the game's first goal, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior captain Andrew Bond (Littleton, Colo./J.K. Mullen) made his 2007 debut in goal and tallied six of Guilford's seven saves in over 53 minutes between the pipes. Senior attackman Bryan Harfenist (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored two goals and an assist for Oberlin. Strand contributed two points with a goal and an assist. Junior Drew Zambelli (Eastchester, N.Y./Fieldston School) went the distance in goal, made a game-high 12 saves and picked up a club-best four ground balls. Guilford returns to action March 31 with a 1:00 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at Hampden-Sydney. After a week of practice in South Carolina, Oberlin plays at Vassar April 1 at 1:00 p.m. |
